There is a perception within mainstream media that the Boston Red Sox led by Craig Breslow made a mistake trading Connelly Early for Curtis Mead. On July 26, 2026, Washington Nationals beat writer Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic said the team hit a home run by acquiring Early.

“This is an A for me. Mead was great, and he probably truly is an .800 OPS guy. But the Nationals need pitching, and the avenue towards getting it is so, so, so difficult. They just got a GUY for someone who was DFA’d and traded for a sixth-rounder for in March. They also have shown the ability to develop hitting (which can change) but that gives you more confidence in the replacements. Truly, instant reaction is that this is a big win”.

Craig Breslow’s Roster Blueprint: Value MLB Talent Over Prospects

Although Spencer’s sentiment may prove true years down the road, this trade fits Boston’s modus operandi. The Boston Red Sox hired Craig Breslow as Chief Baseball Officer on October 25, 2023. Since then, the front office has shown through action that it will trade any young pitching prospect for players it believes are ready to play in the major leagues immediately.

The Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz & Carlos Narváez Precedent

On December 11, 2024, the Boston Red Sox acquired Carlos Narváez from the New York Yankees for Elmer Rodriguez Cruz. During 2024, Elmer was considered a top ten prospect in the Red Sox organization. 

On July 2, 2024, Fangraphs had him ranked as the organization’s seventh-best prospect. Despite this, Craig Breslow chose to trade him for a 26-year-old AAA catcher with only six games of major league experience.

Trading Top-10 Arms: Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts for Sonny Gray

This trend of trading young pitching prospects for major-league talent continued eleven months later. On November 21, 2025, Boston acquired Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts.

During the 2025 season, Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts were considered top-ten prospects in the Red Sox farm system. On June 25, 2025, Fangraphs ranked Fitts as the fifth-best prospect in the organization.

At the time of these rankings, Fitts had only been in the Red Sox organization for roughly 20 months. Boston acquired him on December 5, 2023, from the New York Yankees in exchange for Alex Verdugo.

The second player in the Red Sox package, Brandon Clarke, was two spots behind him as the seventh-best prospect in the organization. The Red Sox traded them for Sonny Gray, a solid mid-rotation starter.

A month later, Boston traded the 18th-best prospect in the farm system, Hunter Dobbins, for Wilson Contreras.

Four months after the Wilson trade, the Red Sox traded the top asset they received from the San Francisco Giants in the Rafael Devers trade. Boston traded Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton and Shane Drohan to the Milwaukee Brewers for Caleb Durbin, Andruw Monasterio, and Anthony Seigler.

At the time of the trade, Durbin had one season of major league experience with the Milwaukee Brewers. 

Lastly, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe stated on July 24, 2026, that Craig Breslow offered the Minnesota Twins Payton Tolle and Franklin Arias for Joe Ryan before the 2025 deadline. At the time of the offer, Tolle was the sixth-ranked prospect in the Boston farm system.

The Connelly Early Trade Follows a Familiar Red Sox Pattern

Given the evidence stated above, the Connelly Early trade is par for the course for this organization. The evidence suggests that they are willing to give up any pitching prospect for players they believe are major league talent. 

Craig Breslow may have this philosophy because he is an Ivy League graduate who pitched in the Major League for 12 years. Consequently, he may believe he has the formula to develop young pitchers rapidly.
